The cscl melting point

A molecule’s melting point depends on the energy required to overcome intermolecular forces that keep the molecules in their lattice. If the molecule has many efficient intermolecular interactions, it will require less energy to melt.

If the molecule has less effective intermolecular interactions, it will require more energy to melt. This is why substances that have a high melting point are usually dense, causing them to be difficult to melt.

CsCl has a very low melting point compared to other d-block elements. It also has the lowest density among the d-block elements and is a good conductor of electricity.

Why does cscl have a lower melting point than sodium chloride?

The reason why cscl has a lower melting point than sodium chloride is because the electronegativities of Na and Cl are different. The higher the difference between the electronegativities of the two compounds, the more ionic the bond is between them, so it requires more energy to break it.

To determine the cscl melting point, we measured the melt composition of a cesium chloride sample in a dry air atmosphere in a microprocessing thermoregulator VARTA TP-403 under controlled temperature conditions. Measurements were made with a Pt/PtRh thermocouple at a rate of 1 measurement per second.
