Silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) is a colorless volatile liquid that fumes in air. It is soluble in benzene, chloroform, petroleum ether and most other organic solvents. It is also soluble in water, but it reacts violently with water to produce hydrogen chloride gas, which is used as smoke screen agent in the military. It can be reduced with hydride reagents to form silane, silicon carboxylate and other industrial silicone compounds. It can also be combined with hydrogen and oxygen to produce a variety of polysilicon alloys.
Sicl4 is produced by the chlorination of ferrosilicon. The process flow is relatively simple: ferrosilicon is heated to above 200, chlorine gas is passed through it to generate silicon tetrachloride. The crude product is then purified by rectification to prepare the finished industrial grade product. The chemical has many applications in the fields of metallurgy and photovoltaics.
