Compared to sodium oxide, MgO is less basic, because the attraction between the Mg2+ and O2- ions is not as strong as in sodium oxide. This means that a larger amount of energy is required to break the association between the Mg2+ and O2-ions in magnesium oxide than in sodium oxide.
MgO is an excellent sintering aid, because it slows down the migration of grain boundaries during sintering. It is used in various refractory bricks and in the production of castables, gunnables, rammables, and spinel formulations. It can be formed from a variety of methods, including cold crucible melting and arc-fusion growth. The most common technique for preparing MgO single crystals is submerged arc fusion growth, which results in high-quality crystals with areas of several square millimeters. The resulting crystals typically have dislocation densities of 1-2×105 cm-2 in the rims and 5-10×105 cm-2 in the interior.
