The carbonyl iron powder is a high purity and microscopically small spherical particles, which is widely used as magnetic recording oxide. It is also used for making ferrofluids and other materials.

CIP (carbonyl iron powder) is produced by chemical decomposition of purified iron pentacarbonyl. It is a highly pure iron and it has the appearance of a grey powder with spherical microparticles. It is composed of carbon, oxygen and nitrogen.

carbonyl iron powders are available in different grades with varying particle size and nitrogen content. Grade 11p -Powder is made with a mean particle size of 3′ to about 3.5 microns and containsV from 0.5f to 0.6% carbon and 0.5 to 0;6% nitrogen.

Cores manufactured with this powder have a Q value of about 190 at 2 mc./s. and 167 at 50 mc./s.

This powder can be modified with PABA to add NH2 end-group to the CI. It can then adsorb to acid-treated MWCNT or graphene via attraction of NH2 and COOH groups.

The MWCNT/CI complex and the graphene/CI complex have better dispersity in silicone oil than the CI powder alone. They have a structure of carbonyl iron nanoparticles adsorbed to MWCNT or graphene by self assembly, respectively.

MRE – magnetorheological elastomer

This paper introduces the synthesis and characterization of magnetorheological elastomers (MRE) containing carbonyl iron powder as magnetic component by melt blending in twin screw extruder. MREs have good characteristics of magnetic control stiffness and are suitable as a spring element of vibration absorbers.
